How To Control Panic Attacks

Panic AwayThere are people who have become so devastated by panic attacks that they reach a point of being afraid to go outside their home. They find their panic attacks not only overwhelming, but embarrassing and don’t want it to happen without any warning when they are around other people.

For some people having a panic attack makes them feel as if they are having a heart attack. For others, a panic attack causes their bowels to become uncontrollable and they end up having to head for the bathroom continually. There are certain times when a person feels like they might be crazy, as well as as if they have lost control of themselves and their reality.

In each of these scenarios, the results are extremely embarrassing and very hard to deal with if they’re in a public environment. Rather than deal with that kind of embarrassment, most people will opt for isolation in their home, never going out unless required as well as having no contact with anyone else.

Panic Attack Control Techniques

There are several recommended techniques that can be used to control panic attacks. It is up to the person having the panic attacks to want to learn the ways to control them so they don’t end up progressing to an even worse condition. Psychotherapy is one of the options to learn control over panic attacks. A psychologist or psychiatrist will be able to help an individual find and deal with the root causes of their panic attacks.

This root cause may stem from a traumatic experience in childhood to an event that occurred more recently and created some kind of trauma. Once they have discovered the root cause, the therapist might be able to help the patient figure out what triggers the panic attack to start with. If the triggers can be identified, it’s easier for the patient to talk himself through the anxiety before it escalates to a panic attack, and then be able to control it.

Another option for controling panic attacks is to learning to relax, something else a therapist can teach someone as way to deal with the triggers when they occur. Patients are taught breathing techniques whereby they pull deep breaths in and out of their diaphragm instead of the usual shallow breaths that we take from the chest. While this helps the person to relax, and doesn’t give the same out of breath feeling that we experience when we’re taking shallow breaths.

Besides learning the breathing exercises, another option for controlling attacks is to learn how to relax. At times this can be promoted by a continual workout program, learning body relaxation techniques, or regular massage. It has been found when a person’s body is able to relax on a regular basis, it’s able to deal with additional stress without being thrown into the experience of a panic attack.  I hope this article helped you with some ideas for how to control panic attacks.
