Whilst in the throes of an attack, you may experience some of the following most common symptoms such as, getting the chills or alternatively feeling a hot flush, being sick, the sensation of not being able to take a full breath, feeling as though you are being choked, a tight chest or a fast heart beat, a thumping heart.

There is no underlying or actual physical cause for the rapid heart beat or the inability to catch your breath. It is the brain being over stimulated by the nervous system which triggers a chain reaction type of events which leads to the symptoms you experience.

The over breathing or hyperventilation as it is known medically, is the main cause of all the symptoms you experience. A fast breathing rate means you breathe out more carbon monoxide, this in turn will raise the level of acidity in your blood, and it is this acidity that will produce all the symptoms we listed above.

The rising acidity levels then produce the symptoms listed above. But it is a vicious circle, as when the sufferer starts to have the other symptoms the more scared they get and then the worse the symptoms get and so it goes on. The vast majority of attacks are over within ten minutes. But you can suffer for a few hours with it coming and going.

More women than men have panic attacks and younger people are more likely to be effected than any other age group.

The best way to stop the attack getting out of control is to think and concentrate on controlling your breathing. Take nice deep, very slow breaths. This will stop you hyperventilating and in turn it will break the cycle of the attack. It is recommended that you put a paper bag over your nose and mouth and breath slowly in and out. This works by keeping the carbon monoxide you breathe out whilst hyperventilating within the bag, and you will breath it back in again, which will prevent the acidity level rising and get the attack under control.

Figuring out the reason why you have suddenly started to have panic attacks is an essential step in starting to cure them. For some the reasons may be obvious, such as a death in the family. Redundancy, stress in relationships and a generally stressful lifestyle can all contribute. Understanding the reasons and addressing it is important. Sometimes you will be unable to identify a reason.

The more informed and knowledgeable you are about the way your body works and reacts during an attack will go some way in helping you to over come the problem. I hope this article on how to deal with panic attacks was helpful for you.
